Cast in concrete and embedded with large salt crystals, the piece preserves natural voids, fractures, and mineral-like formations created by the material itself. When illuminated from below, the salt refracts and diffuses light, revealing textures reminiscent of a geological cross-section or an urban terrain sample. My art practice weaves through the intricate interrelations between humans and the Earth. We step on the land, walk on the ground, bound by the gravity, breathe the air, yet our view often floats in midair. We thrive on the Earth but rarely enfold it into our identity. I am interested in how we perceive the Earth and how these perceptions shape our interactions with it. My work engages technology to create multimedia installations that dissolve the boundaries between us and the Earth, and render our sensitivity to the existence of other ways of living. In the context of climate change and ecological crisis, our world and society are filled with horror and worry. I seek to create art that navigates the tension more into care and hope, how we might rediscover love and empathy with Earth and all things around us amid a time of uncertainty, loss, and transformation. My practice spans new media forms, such as websites, sound projects, and interactive installations, offering poetic encounters with the Earth including organisms and inorganic copartners. I use technology to blend reality with perception, to express through both logic and emotion, to see the world from both science and intuition. I am a receipt of Judson-Morrissey Excellence in New Media Award and Tisch Initiative of Creative Research Fellowship. My work has been exhibited at Emergence Festival in Rotterdam, BioBAT Art Space in Brooklyn, :iidrr Gallery in New York, Bobst Library at New York University, #CreateCOP28, The Wrong Biennale, New Media Caucus, Shoreditch Arts Club in London, and among others. The installation features a intricate hand-layered reimagining of Lake Bonneville, spanning 8 x 18 feet, with its primary material: salt, sand, and water. The interpretative landscape fuses topographic and geologic knowledge, changing over time where water meets the salt-scape. The Great Salt Lake, depicted by a computer numerically controlled (CNC) system, captures at its lowest water level in November 2022 as a result of climate change. Water drops slowly and evenly from the CNC system, symbolizing the concept of precise time we humans construct and possess in the Great Acceleration. The water permeates into the landscape of salt and sand, gradually evaporating under the gallery’s climate, leaving a temporal trace signifies human impact on the environment. The ephemeral contour, along with its surrounding pattern of cracks expands an experience from spatial-scale to an awareness of time-scale on site, resonating with the passage of industrial time and deep time. The shifting salt-scape, with its multifold substance, remains unstable within the space, offering a view on the progressive evolution of inert matter and the delicate balance of the Earth. The algae utilize the audience’s collective carbon exhalations within the exhibition space, revealing the mutual dependencies between humans and photosynthetic organisms. Algae are a diverse group of aquatic photosynthetic organisms that produce around 70% of the earth’s oxygen. They also assimilate most of the carbon dioxide on the earth. As we face the climate emergency, algae are critical organisms that we imagine ways to make their role in the carbon cycle more visible. In this project, three species of algae live in disparate domestic containers in various growth stages, including single-cell cyanobacteria: Spirulina, microalgae: Nannochloropsis, and Chlorella Vulgaris. This installation explores the visual perception of the varied green shades of each algae colony, formed by degrees of density, and it embodies humanity’s affection for green aesthetics and the essence of color originating in nature. The algae’s growth and movements are manifested by light sensors in their biological time. While audiences inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, the atmosphere in the exhibition is slowly affected and also gets detected by a carbon dioxide sensor. All these data are translated into sound synthesis and tune the chorus. Through a rich visual and listening experience with algae, this project provides a space for contemplating oxygen and carbon dioxide circulation, and raises questions about our habit of anthropocentrism and the hierarchy of biological taxonomy. Most of algae blooms are formed by cyanobacteria, the first ancient organism that perform photosynthesis on Earth. These green patches spreading across water bodies often portrayed as environmental hazards, yet the causes of algae blooms are frequently linked to industrial waste, which leads to water eutrophication. Under favorable conditions, cyanobacteria are able to double their population in a single day, demonstrating their remarkable reproduction ability, the very essence of autopoiesis. The more they reproduce, the fast they photosynthesis, absorbing carbon dioxide, and releasing oxygen, contributing to update the ecological system and rebalance the atmosphere. This work presents an alternative narrative of algae bloom, who playing a significant role as photosynthesiers and oxygen producers. The installation’s soundtrack is composed of individual faint sound pieces produced by cyanobacteria’s oxygen-containing bubbles. It is a one-of-a-kind solution that turns waste into beauty through design and promotes recycling as a new fashion. This project is inspired by the Swiss brand FREITAG, which makes bags from recycled truck tarps. 3D printing has become more accessible these years and is widely used by academics to industry. The most common material for 3D printers is PLA, polylactic acid, marketed as biodegradable though the composting condition is quite strict. Tons of PLA waste is produced and treated as single-use plastic and ends up in landfill or unregulated waste. These Jewelry utilize excess PLA waste at NYU’s Makerspace, remelt and reshape them into unique trinkets with new values to prevent them from entering the biogeochemical cycle. Patricia Corcoran, Charles J.Moore, and Kelly Jazvac proposed the idea of plastiglomerate, used as a maker of a new geologic period, the Anthropocene. They are mixtures of sedimentary grains, organic debris agglutinated by melted plastic, first found on Kamilo Beach in Hawaii. Through GLSL, a shading programing language, shapes and colors are varied and balanced among generative compositions.
